Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to apply for the Graduate Engineer position at Industrus Engineering. As a recent Bachelor of Software Engineering graduate from UTS, majoring in Data Analytics, I offer practical experience in data modelling, reporting and stakeholder engagement gained during a 12-week internship at PIP. I am particularly attracted to Industrus Engineering’s graduate program because it offers the opportunity to contribute to multidisciplinary engineering projects while continuing to develop my technical and professional capabilities. My experience using Power BI, data models and structured reporting has prepared me to make a positive contribution to your team.

3.1 Commitment to ethical practices and integrity
During my internship at PIP, I was asked to automate a daily report that was previously prepared manually. The existing report calculated daily earnings by subtracting the previous day’s cumulative monthly earnings from the current total, whereas the source system provided daily earnings directly.
To ensure that the automated report preserved the integrity of the original figures, I documented both calculation methods and compared the automated results with the nightly report snapshots. I then presented my findings to my supervisor and explained the change in methodology. My analysis confirmed that the figures matched, allowing the automated report to proceed with confidence. This experience reinforced the importance of validating information, documenting changes and communicating transparently when modifying an established reporting process.
3.2 Effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders
While developing a reporting dashboard, I needed to consolidate information held across the IT, Warehousing and Sales departments. Each department used different platforms and processes, so I organised meetings with team leaders and relevant staff to clarify their requirements and obtain the appropriate data access.
I submitted targeted support requests, documented stakeholder requirements and confirmed which measures and visualisations would be most useful to each department. This produced a clear requirements document, secured the necessary data and provided an agreed foundation for developing the dashboard. By maintaining regular communication across the departments, I reduced uncertainty and ensured that the proposed report reflected the needs of its intended users.
3.3 Ability to engage in a creative, innovative and proactive environment
During my internship, I proactively investigated how the customer-engagement data I was analysing related to PIP’s wider product-development activities. I approached members of the creative and product teams to learn about the new workwear and safety-wear products they were developing and to understand which customer insights were most valuable to them.
I used this knowledge to interpret product-engagement trends in their business context and ensure that the reporting focused on information relevant to current product initiatives. Taking the initiative to engage with teams outside my immediate area strengthened my analysis and gave me a clearer understanding of how technical reporting can support creative and commercial decision-making. I would bring the same curiosity, initiative and broader problem-solving approach to projects at Industrus Engineering.
3.4 Demonstrated ability to use and manage information
My reporting responsibilities required me to work with live organisational data and create a new Power BI model based on a recently deployed model. I examined the structure and origin of the data, maintained the model in an approved shared location and ensured that the relevant users had appropriate access.
Rather than distributing the report separately to approximately two dozen individuals, I published it to the correct team group. This established a central and controlled source of information, simplified access management and reduced the risk of users relying on inconsistent versions. The experience strengthened my understanding of data accuracy, version control, accessibility and the responsible management of business information.
3.5 Ability to manage my own performance in a professional environment
I take an organised and reflective approach to managing my performance. During my internship, I requested feedback from my supervisor and relevant task owners after completing key stages of my work so that I could confirm whether the deliverables met expectations and identify areas for improvement.
For a Warehousing reporting project involving multiple stakeholders, I maintained a daily journal and checklist to record completed work, outstanding tasks, stakeholder feedback and changing requirements. This allowed me to prioritise my workload, monitor progress and raise questions before they developed into larger issues. As a result, I remained accountable for my responsibilities and kept the project progressing despite input from several stakeholders.
3.6 Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and show leadership when required
As part of my internship project, I investigated the requirements for a live data model and worked closely with the engineer responsible for the entity-relationship diagram. Because the model’s components needed to be finalised together, I took ownership of identifying the required information from the master data tables and explaining how it needed to be represented in the model.
I maintained communication throughout the development process and raised discrepancies when the figures did not match. I then worked with the engineer to trace the source of the inconsistencies and agree on the appropriate corrections. By leading the clarification of the reporting requirements and coordinating the resolution of data issues, I helped the team establish a more accurate model while making effective use of the engineer’s technical expertise. This experience demonstrated my ability to contribute collaboratively while taking responsibility and providing direction when required.
